Safety issue - Homer Bell - 07-14-2026

Not sure if this is the place to post this but , the last two wrecks I’ve got had brackets hanging from the top of the cabin to hang headsets on. I strongly suggest against this. These will tear your head up in a wreck. Hang headsets somewhere else.
Another suggestion is to recess all the switches in the over head switch panel. Get them up where they can’t cut your head. First Scorpion I crashed had the screws in the top windows come across the top of my helmet. Some nice deep scratches there . Glad I was wearing a helmet that day. That’s been over 50 years ago. How time flies.

i like the idea of recessed switches, i'm wanting to implement this on my ship. i'll make an attempt when i do the bulk of my fiberglass work.

i saw a ship that used a loop/lanyard to secure headsets up with a simple snap lock. i think it looked rather simple.

the other method i kind of liked was the steel adel clamp since they are cushioned and springy. we actually use the same style in our BK117's at work.

i wish i had good headroom for a helmet in the 162F...

Homer brings up a great point. If you have read the account of the Safari main rotor blade delaminating in flight on my website under rotor blades you can see that bad things can happen. When the helicopter landed up side down the metal head set holder took a big chunk out of his scalp. I rushed him to the ER to get sewn back together.

From that experience on I have installed this soft silicone headset hangar in most ships that I have instructed in. You can order from Amazon.

I also know a guy whose top windscreen screws were 1/4" to long, protruding past their nuts by 1/4".
And when he crashed, one was drug across the top of his head (no helmit on).

I never could understand why Rotorway mounts all those switches and breakers overhead.
Why would you run all that wiring up there and then back down.
All I have up there is a rubber mount for my headsets and thats it.

Good point Geno. Most likely due to lack of anywhere else to mount them due to limited panel space.

Where did you put all your switches and breakers. I dislike overhead switches with a passion. I'm in the early stages of a build and all ears and eyes for an alternate switch mounting solution.

I built an electrical "Tray" under the cyclic cross shaft.
It holds my computer, breaker panel and voltage regulator.
And all I have are 9 toggle switches.
