: Hello from Cork, Ireland A600 Talon build in progress

Hi everyone, Shane here, 42, based in Cork, Ireland. Been lurking on the forum for the past year while I've been working on my A600 Talon build finally decided to register properly and contribute where I can. Background: aeronautical engineer by trade (composites/aerodynamics, Dalton Aerospace in Cork), PPL(A) but not CFI and not an A&P; so I'll be reading more than posting on the deep technical threads. Building the A600 at my hangar at Cork Airport (EICK), about 60% through the build process now. Been at it 18 months, hoping to fly by Q2 2027 if all goes well. Got interested in Rotorway after a flight in an Exec 162F at a fly-in at Weston (EIWT) back in 2022. The A600 felt like the right kit for me Rotax 914 is well-supported in Europe, reasonable build time, and the support community (this forum + Orv's tips) is excellent. Challenges of building in Ireland: parts shipping from Chandler AZ is pricey and slow (typical 2-3 weeks), and post-Brexit there's extra customs friction when sourcing from UK vendors. I've learned to plan ahead and group orders. Anyone else here building in Europe? Would love to compare notes. Looking forward to being part of the community properly now. Will share build photos in the Documentation/Blog section once I've got something worth showing.

Welcome Shane! glad to hear of another person building and looking forward to flying in the coming year! everyone else seems to be having all the fun with flying their machines. seems to be a good couple people in France, and those italian made Turbine rotorways are something to DROOL OVER!

Hi Shane, welcome to the community. Have you checked out all of the helpful info on the website at the top of the page under the green button yet? It has loads of info there. You mentioned the Rotax 914, does it have adequate hp at 4250 rpm and can it be mounted vertically? If so it will be very interesting to see how it performs for you.

I opted for a standard Rotax 914UL. This isn’t the A600’s original engine (which was designed for the RI 600N), but several builders have converted their aircraft to use this engine, and I chose this option because of its proven reliability and the availability of parts.
Rotax’s support network in Europe is a real plus (particularly with Heckes Flugzeugtechnik in Germany and the network of authorized service centers), which was a key factor in my decision to build the plane in Ireland.
With 115 ch at takeoff (100 ch continuous), it should be suitable for reasonable use of the A600, although I remain aware that the integration and performance will depend heavily on the quality of the installation and the aircraft’s final weight.

Thanks for the welcome, and yes, I’ve gone over Orv’s tips (the green button) in detail. A real goldmine, especially the sections on aligning the carriage slides and making the sliders. Orv clearly knows more about these machines than most of us will ever learn.
As for the engine, the 914UL does indeed run at high RPM: 115 ch at 5,800 rpm (5-minute limit) and 100 ch continuously at 5,500 rpm. At 4,250 rpm, the available power would be significantly lower according to the engine curve, which would likely be insufficient for a helicopter, particularly during hover flight where continuous power is critical.
For vertical mounting, the 914 is a boxer engine designed for horizontal installation. The float-type carburetors, lubrication, and cooling systems are all optimized for this orientation. A vertical installation would require extensive modifications and clearly goes beyond the scope of standard use.
As for my choice, I am aware that the A600’s original engine is the Rotorway RI 600N. My intention is to use a Rotax 914UL in a configuration that has been proven by other manufacturers, mounted horizontally with an integration tailored to the airframe. The goal is to stay as close as possible to a proven design in terms of center of gravity and powertrain, in order to minimize the risks associated with an overly experimental configuration.

Please share pictures of your progress!
i know many individuals in the community that would be interested in re-engining their machines.

i would be worried about having slightly less power available with the 914, listed at 110 hp vs the RI162F's listed 150hp even though its closer to 125hp when tested...

im curious!

110 hp would be very marginal for even one pilot. I hope that you reconsider but I certainly am interested to see how this works for you.

Dale Rhodes in Lake City Florida is working on powering his Rotorway with a UL power engine. The last I heard, the installed engine does not produce the needed power for flight but I believe Dale is continuing to work on a solution.

Another group is working on the installation of an all aluminum 6 cylinder (IIR) Honda engine that Honda is adapting for install in the Rotorway. Joe Huff had more info on that progress.

I would agree, 115 hp is to low and you will be disappointed. I’d guess you need closer to 150 or more to be happy. The A600 is probably close to 200# heavier than the old original EXEC of the 1980’s. I think the landing gear alone is like 20# heavier. Weighted it once , can’t remember. Most of the frame tubes are almost twice as thick as the original. Shaft drive tail added a bunch of weight.
How well the fiberglass panels are made can be quite a bit different. If they don’t get a lot of the resin out when making them, they can be really heavy. Some of the A600 panels I’ve handled are not light.
