Autorotation into the trees.

About 20 years ago I had a student with a 162f and an immaculate paint job. He did not like removing the inspection panels because it would mar his perfect paint job. One morning he and his wife met another Rotorway owner, also a former student of mine, to fly out to breakfast. He told me that he knew that the tail rotor belt tension was a bit loose but he had been flying with them loose and did not notice any issue with them. He elected to fly them in that condition because he did not want to remove the rear tail boom cover to access the tension bolts due to his perfect paint job.

On the flight home he elected to take a short cut over a densely wooded area instead of flying around it as I had instructed. When the helicopter was about midway over the forest he heard a bang, felt a mechanical slap on the helicopter structure, and knew to immediately enter an autorotation. The problem is that he placed himself in an area where there was no good place to land. Jim kept his cool and flared into the top of the 75’ oak trees.

The helicopter settled into the tree tops and when the main rotors contacted the oak branches the helicopter inverted and tumbled to the ground. Jim and Mia his wife were securely strapped into the helicopter as it plummeted down through the trees inverted. A limb came through the upper windshield and through Jim’s thigh impaling him in the cabin where he could not move. The fuel pump inertia switches did their job and shut the fuel pumps off killing the engine so there was no fire.

Mia was able to crawl out of the wreckage and had to hike to a spot to get cell coverage. Once connected she called 911 and shortly the emergency crews began the process of extricating Jim. While in the hospital Jim called me and told me that his concern over his perfect paint job cost him his helicopter. He also told me that he should have followed my instruction to not fly over areas that you don’t want to land in.

Upon inspection we found the middle tail rotor belt had broken due to running it too loose. It would be exceptionally rare for a properly tensioned belt to break. Always check your belt tensions prior to flying your helicopter. The tail rotor belt tensions can change with temperature, especially with a dark panted tail boom.

i wonder if had he not immediately entered an autorotation could he have elected to keep his forward airspeed to auto into a more suitable location.

i have a friend with a brand new R44 who also owns a construction company, on every new piece of equipment he has he intentionally scratches the paint in a seen location, i think it was the chin on his 44. this is to remove the stigma around scratches dents, minor cosmetic damage.

maintenance and preflight is prudent on helicotpers... cant let our ego or pride in cosmetics get the best of us... instead building your ship to suit your preflights makes it better! (hinged access doors) latches on the seatback panels, the R66 has access panel lights with automatic switches to illuminate when the access panels are open!

Most accidents involve several preventable events that culminate in that outcome. Jim did not keep his tail rotor belt at the proper tension and he was flying over a wooded area with no good landing spot. What he did right was to not panic, when in doubt-auto out. He continued flying his disabled helicopter by immediately entering an autorotation, flaring into the tops of the trees and lived to fly again, although never again in his once-beautiful Rotorway. 

My own Rotorway has a beautiful 25 year old paint job with many of the screws and dzus fasteners showing chipped paint from the many panel removals during maintenance and pre-flight inspections. It has been a great helicopter and is on engine #8 which is Joe Huffs final version of his 172 conversion. I flew the original engine until it was tired at around 300 hours. At that point I had Montana Kasey rebuild the engine which lasted 33.3 hours before blowing up in flight. At that point I installed a spare engine from a roll over that I had purchased and flew it for another 20 hours before installing Joe's first prototype engine. I flew each of the 4 Joe Huff prototype engines in my helicopter for several hours before we would remove them, tear them down and check wear. Joe would make some changes, build another engine and we would install it in my ship then fly with it until time to tear it down again for inspection. 

The process was arduous but Joe was determined to get it right before offering his conversion to the community. I do not look forward to another engine removal/installation cycle and I am confident that this latest version of Joe's engine will last the rest of my flying career.

It never ceased to amaze me how guys would fly even once in a Rotorway without a thorough preflight.
